Hal Cannon's CD

Music rots when it gets too far from the dance. Poetry atrophies when it gets too far from music. ~Ezra Pound

THANK YOU

Music is all about generosity and magic. My most sincere thanks to all who have been generous to me, particularly my fellow magic hunters. First, my gratitude goes to the loves of my life, my dear mate, Teresa, and my daughter, Anneliese. Next, I thank my family for allowing me to dream Dumbo dreams as a child. (In my version, the elephant redeemed himself with a guitar.) During my thirty years playing with the Deseret String Band, I learned that music is both a time and timeless machine. Thanks to all my dear old-time music comrades for teaching me to dig deep into tradition. Thanks also to the folklorists who opened up a big world to me and taught me about cultural equity. I owe a great debt to cowboy poets and singers who gave me the desire to both write my own songs and to honor the land of my birth. The last decade has been a gift, working with my partner, Taki Telonidis, and exploring musical stories for NPR and PBS. All of these people, along with my songwriting group, have helped point the way to this recording.

Also, I owe a great debt to Richard Burton for enabling me to take this path with support and then forcing me to find my own worth. Thanks to Leonard and Kennard at Intermountain Guitar & Banjo for keeping me addicted to beautiful instruments; to the generous and talented Red Rock Rondo musicians who changed musical gears to perform with me; and to the other handful of lovely players and singers who joined in: Rex Flinner, Anke Summerhill, Cathy Foy and my old friend Tom Carter. Thanks to Kate MacLeod for helping me realize my songs; to Phillip Bimstein for creating the musical scenery to accompany a several of these pieces; to Jim Rooney who dropped into my world to conduct the production; to Jesse Ellis who patiently worked with me to record in my basement; to Michael Greene, a master recording engineer who brought it all together; to my old friend Willy Matthews for visualizing that which is musical. Thanks to friends who listened and gave advice along the way, including Andy Wilkinson, Paul Zarzyski, Chris Montague, Stephanie Davis, Gary McMahan and Tom Carter.
