Desert Home

Who can resist the smell of rain on sage? It’s a smell that defines the western desert. This is an anthem, of sorts, which suggests a solution for the inability of a younger generation to afford a life on the land.

Hal, guitar, lead vocal; Kate, fiddle, vocal; Anke, vocal, Rex, mandolin; Tom, banjo; Harold, bass

Through the rocks and the sands and all desert demands
Through a sky that’s eternally blue
I will ride through each day and will work without pay

To stay on my dear old desert home

chorus
My desert home, burning Piñion
The mountain Douglas Fir, the berried Juniper
When the rain falls, then the sage calls
Come back to your dear old desert home.

Though the water is rare and the sun hot and clear
Though the people are scattered about
I will stay on this place, and will set my own pace
on my home, my dear old desert home.

chorus

I will glory in views that are clear, straight and true
I will live free and close to the ground
I will find peace of mind, far from city and grind
On this place, my dear old desert home

chorus

Then I’ll pass it along to the kids for a song

Know that life on the land cannot die
As the world spins so fast fear that mankind can’t last
Let us stay on our dear old desert home.

Chorus
